Emergency Dentistry Q & A

When should I see an emergency dentist?

If you are dealing with persistent and painful toothaches, have noticeable bleeding or swelling around a tooth, or were in an accident that caused your tooth to become dislodged or fall out completely, you will need to see an emergency dentist.

Getting the care you need as quickly as possible is critical for saving your teeth. Waiting too long could compromise Dr. Muzaffar’s ability to restore your tooth and could lead to more oral health issues. Dr. Muzaffar has availability during the evening after work hours and over the weekend to ensure patients are able to get the emergency care they need as soon as possible.

You can call the practice or the emergency number after hours for immediate assistance.

What do I do in a dental emergency?

Knowing what to do in a dental emergency can save your tooth and help the dentist fix the problem sooner than later. Here’s what to do in different situations:

Rinse the mouth with warm water and use dental floss to remove any debris or food that might be caught between teeth. Do not put aspirin on a tooth or gum tissue.

Objects Stuck in Mouth

Gently remove objects with dental floss but avoid using any sharp or pointed instruments that could damage the teeth and gums.

Knocked Out Tooth

Keep the tooth and gums moist at all times. If possible, gently push the tooth back into the socket without touching the tooth root and keep it there with a small hand towel until you can see the dentist. If this is not possible, place the tooth in a small container of milk and bring it into the office.

Cracked Tooth

Rinse the mouth with warm water and keep the area as clean as possible. Avoid eating or drinking anything as this could aggravate the tooth. Manage any swelling with a cold compress.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

Keep the area clean by water only and apply a cold compress to manage swelling.
